Good to Know

Conakry travel essentials

The practical details, handled before you pack.

Visa & Entry

UK citizens need a visa for Guinea — apply via Guinea's e-visa portal or the Embassy in London before travel. A yellow fever certificate is mandatory on arrival. We'll checklist everything with you.

Best Time to Visit

November to April is the dry season — lower humidity, calm seas for the island crossings, and the best roads into the Fouta Djallon.

Money & Payments

Guinean franc (GNF). A deeply cash-first economy — bring clean EUR or USD notes to exchange in the city; cards work only in a handful of hotels.

Language

French is the official language; Susu, Pular and Maninka fill the markets. English is limited outside hotels — a few French phrases open every door.

Time Zone

GMT — the same clock as London, all year round. Land at 14:45 local with zero jet lag; the beach is still hours from sunset.

CKY → City Centre

Ahmed Sékou Touré International sits ~13km from the Kaloum peninsula — 30–40 minutes depending on traffic. We arrange trusted, pre-booked transfers.

Questions

Conakry trip FAQs

Not currently — RwandAir connects through its Kigali hub, the smoothest one-stop routing available at around 16h 15m fastest. Bags are checked all the way through to CKY and the Kigali connection is guaranteed on a single ticket.
Both: UK passport holders need a visa (Guinea's e-visa is applied for online before travel, or via the Embassy in London) and a yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory on arrival. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before departure. Our team walks you through the full entry checklist so nothing surprises you at check-in.
No — Guinea runs on GMT, the exact same time as the UK all year round. Your overnight flight lands mid-afternoon local time, which is also your body's afternoon. Drop your bags, and you've lost not a single hour.
On a through-ticketed RwandAir booking you're protected: the airline rebooks you on the next available Conakry flight at no cost. Both legs are the same carrier, your bags are transferred for you, and our 24/7 team monitors the connection in real time.
Economy includes 23kg checked plus 7kg cabin on every leg, with the checked bag tagged straight through to CKY. Extra allowance — popular for family visits and shipments — can be pre-booked through us at better rates than airport prices.
Yes — Kaloum and Ratoma district hotels, plus trusted airport transfers for the 30–40 minute ride into the city, can all be added to your booking. For the overnight Kigali connection, we can also arrange a transit hotel with shuttle so you rest between flights.
